Tamsui Station
Tamsui Station is located in Tamsui District, New Taipei City, and serves as the northern terminus of the Taipei Metro Tamsui–Xinyi Line. It is also one of the most important transportation hubs in the Tamsui area. The station is situated close to Tamsui Old Street, the Tamsui Ferry Pier, and the Tamsui waterfront, making it the starting point for many visitors exploring the district. In the future, it will also connect with Phase II of the Danhai Light Rail Blue Sea Line, further strengthening the region’s transportation network.
The history of Tamsui Station dates back to the Japanese colonial period, when it served as the terminal station of the Tamsui Line operated by the Railway Department of the Government-General of Taiwan. After World War II, the line was operated by the Taiwan Railway Administration until it was converted into part of the Taipei Metro system. The original railway service was subsequently discontinued, and the site was transformed into the modern metro station seen today. Due to its location at the northern edge of Taiwan’s main island, Tamsui Station has long been regarded as one of the country's northernmost and most significant rail transportation points.
The station’s architecture incorporates local characteristics of Tamsui. Its design draws inspiration from traditional Minnan red-brick architecture as well as the Western colonial-style buildings that form part of Tamsui’s historical heritage. Red-brick motifs are prominently featured throughout the exterior, reflecting the area's rich cultural and historical landscape. Upon leaving the station, visitors are immediately immersed in Tamsui’s distinctive riverside atmosphere and relaxed coastal charm.
Just a few minutes’ walk from the station lies the famous Tamsui Old Street, where visitors can enjoy a wide variety of local snacks, souvenir shops, and scenic waterfront views. Nearby, the Tamsui Ferry Pier provides ferry services to destinations such as Bali and Fisherman’s Wharf, offering travelers a unique opportunity to appreciate the scenery of the Tamsui River estuary and the surrounding Guanyin Mountain from the water.
The station also features its own station melody, “Song of the Blue Sea,” composed by Chen Chien-nien. This musical theme adds a distinctive cultural touch to the travel experience at Tamsui Station.
