Ikuta Shrine

Address 1-2-1 Yamatedori, Chuo Ward, Kobe, Hyogo, Japan

Ikuta Shrine is located in the Chuo Ward of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and is one of the city’s most iconic shrines as well as one of its oldest and most important centers of worship. Dedicated to Wakahirume-no-Mikoto, the shrine is traditionally believed to have been founded in 201 CE, giving it a history of more than 1,800 years. It is regarded not only as the guardian shrine of the Kobe region but also as a place deeply connected to the very origins of the city itself.

According to legend, while returning from her expedition to the Korean Peninsula, Empress Jingū sailed through what is now Kobe Harbor. Her ship suddenly became unable to proceed. After seeking divine guidance through a ritual divination, Wakahirume-no-Mikoto revealed a wish to be enshrined at that location. In response, Empress Jingū established a shrine there, marking the beginning of Ikuta Shrine’s history.

In ancient times, Ikuta Shrine was ranked as a Myojin Taisha, one of the highest-ranking shrines listed in the Engishiki records, reflecting its great religious significance. The shrine once possessed extensive lands, and the people responsible for managing its affairs and serving the deity were known as kanbe (神戸). Over time, this term evolved into the name “Kobe,” making Ikuta Shrine an important symbol of the city’s origin and development.

Although the shrine stands in the heart of bustling downtown Kobe, visitors immediately encounter a calm and peaceful atmosphere upon entering its grounds. The vibrant vermilion-colored Romon Gate, main hall, and torii gate stand out beautifully amid the surrounding greenery, creating a sense of dignity and serenity. Within the precincts lies the sacred woodland known as Ikuta no Mori (Ikuta Forest), which has long been regarded as a holy place and remains a rare natural oasis preserved within the modern city.

Because Wakahirume-no-Mikoto is associated with weaving, daily life, harmonious relationships, and good fortune, Ikuta Shrine is particularly famous as a place to pray for love, matchmaking, and family happiness. Many worshippers visit specifically to seek blessings for romantic relationships, successful marriages, and harmonious personal connections.
