Osu Shopping District
Located in Nagoya, Osu Shopping Street has a history spanning more than 400 years. It is one of the city's most iconic shopping districts and is often referred to as "Japan's Most Vibrant Shopping Street." Centered around the approach to historic temples such as Osu Kannon and Banshoji Temple, the area has flourished since the Edo period, when large numbers of worshippers and merchants helped transform it into a thriving commercial hub. Today, it continues to retain the lively atmosphere of a traditional downtown neighborhood.
Stretching approximately 1.7 kilometers (1.1 miles), the covered arcade is home to more than 1,200 shops, offering everything from restaurants and cafés to fashion boutiques, vintage clothing stores, lifestyle goods, electronics, and specialty retailers. Compared with Nagoya's modern Sakae district, Osu offers a more local and down-to-earth experience, attracting visitors of all ages as well as travelers from around the world. It is also regarded as one of the birthplaces of Japan's cosplay culture. Every year, the World Cosplay Summit brings together cosplay enthusiasts from across the globe, transforming the entire neighborhood into a vibrant festival filled with colorful costumes and exciting events.
The district's most recognizable landmark is Osu Kannon Temple. Originally founded in 1324, the temple was first located near present-day Hashima City in Gifu Prefecture. In 1612, it was relocated to its current site during the construction of Nagoya Castle, giving the surrounding area its name, Osu. Throughout the year, the temple hosts a variety of religious ceremonies and festivals. Among its most popular events is the Antique Market, held on the 18th and 28th of every month, where collectors and visitors gather to search for antiques, vintage goods, and unique treasures.
Beyond shopping, Osu Shopping Street hosts numerous seasonal events throughout the year. Summer brings the lively Osu Summer Festival, autumn features the Osu Street Performers Festival, and winter is highlighted by traditional celebrations such as the Setsubun Treasure Ship Parade.
