Located in Taito City, Tokyo, Japan, the “Ueno Zoological Gardens,” commonly known as “Ueno Zoo,” is the oldest zoo in Japan and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Tokyo area. Since its opening on March 20, 1882, the zoo has served as an important place for locals and visitors to learn about wildlife and connect with nature.

Covering approximately 14.1 hectares, Ueno Zoo houses and exhibits over 2,200 animals from about 420 species around the world. It boasts rich biodiversity and a wide variety of animals. The zoo’s most iconic stars are the giant pandas from China, beloved by both children and adults, and recognized as a symbol of Ueno. A panda statue is also placed inside nearby Ueno Station as a landmark.

The zoo is divided into two main areas: the East Garden and the West Garden, connected by the “Ueno Zoo Monorail,” which allows visitors to move easily and explore thoroughly. It is conveniently located just about a 5-minute walk from the Park Exit of JR Ueno Station, making it a must-visit spot when touring the Ueno Park area.
