Kyushu Railway History Museum
The Kyushu Railway History Museum is located in Kiyotaki, Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, right next to the famous Mojiko Station. It is a museum dedicated to showcasing the history and culture of railways in Kyushu. The museum officially opened on August 9, 2003, and the building itself holds historical value—it was originally constructed in 1891 as the first headquarters of Kyushu Railway. Later repurposed, the red-brick building has now been recognized as a Modern Industrial Heritage site and is registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property.
Covering an area of about 7,800 square meters, the museum consists of three main sections: the main building, the rolling stock exhibition area, and Japan’s first outdoor “Mini Railway Park.” Inside the main building, visitors can find many valuable exhibits, such as the old Kyushu Railway passenger car Chibu No. 37, a massive railway diorama with sound and light effects, and a collection of historical train headmarks. There is also a driving simulator that lets visitors experience operating a train between Mojiko and Orio, while children can enjoy a dedicated play area that introduces them to the world of railways.
The rolling stock exhibition area is a paradise for railway enthusiasts. It preserves and displays nine iconic vehicles, ranging from steam locomotives to electric trains and limited express models, presenting the evolution of Kyushu’s railways. Even more popular is the “Mini Railway Park,” where 450 mm gauge tracks allow scaled-down trains—such as the 787, 883, and 885 series—to carry passengers, simulating the experience of real train travel. This has become a favorite attraction for families.
The Kyushu Railway History Museum is not just a static display facility; it frequently holds special exhibitions and hands-on events, giving visitors deeper insights into how railways shaped Kyushu’s industry, trade, and daily life. Together with the nearby Mojiko Retro District, tourists can enjoy a unique sightseeing route that combines historical architecture, harbor scenery, and railway culture in northern Kyushu.
