Minato City

Minato City is one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, Japan, located in the southeastern part of central Tokyo and facing Tokyo Bay. It is known for its strong international atmosphere and is home to many foreign embassies.

Within Minato, there are several important business districts and residential areas. Akasaka, Shimbashi, and Hamamatsucho are business hubs with numerous corporate headquarters, office buildings, and hotels, bustling with crowds on weekdays. Roppongi is a famous nightlife hotspot with a rich selection of restaurants and entertainment venues, popular among both foreign tourists and local young people.

The upscale residential areas of Azabu and Shirokanedai are renowned for their quiet and refined living environments. Aoyama blends fashion, luxury boutiques, and art, making it one of Tokyo’s most prestigious shopping streets. Odaiba, which has been rapidly developed in recent years, has become a new tourist attraction with its seaside views and shopping malls.

In addition, three major urban redevelopment projects—Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown, and Shiodome SIO-SITE—combine office, residential, shopping, and cultural facilities, reflecting the diversity of modern urban life.

Despite its modern development, Minato also preserves many historical sites and cultural assets. The famous Sengakuji Temple is where the graves of the 47 Ronin are located, serving as a historical testament to the story of loyalty. Zojoji Temple, the family temple of the Tokugawa clan, dates back to the Edo period and is surrounded by remnants of former feudal lords' residences.

Imperial-related structures such as the Akasaka Estate and the State Guest House add a dignified historical atmosphere to the ward.

Minato is also a cultural hub of Tokyo, home to many renowned museums and concert halls. Suntory Hall is an important venue for domestic and international symphony orchestras. Art lovers can visit the following museums:

  • The National Art Center, Tokyo: Known for its rotating exhibitions without permanent displays.

  • Suntory Museum of Art: Focuses on art related to traditional Japanese culture.

  • Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum: The building itself is a historical structure showcasing various artworks.

  • Nezu Museum: Houses East Asian antique art collections and features a beautiful Japanese garden.

Shiba Park and Kyu Shiba Rikyu Gardens provide rare natural spaces in the city center; Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park and the Institute for Nature Study are ideal for leisurely walks and observing nature. Along the waterfront are Odaiba Marine Park, Rainbow Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty, among other attractions.
