Hitachinaka City

Hitachinaka City, located in the central region of Ibaraki Prefecture, was established in 1994 through the merger of the former Katsuta City and Nakaminato City. The city features a combination of industry, port activity, and tourism, making it a well-balanced and diverse urban area.

Historically, former Katsuta City developed as a company town for Hitachi Ltd., with a solid industrial foundation. Even today, many residents are employed by Hitachi and its affiliated companies. As a commuter satellite city of nearby Mito City, Hitachinaka has recently seen the growth of suburban commercial facilities, highlighting its convenient and livable urban functions.

On the other hand, the former Nakaminato City was centered on the fishing industry, blessed with abundant coastal and tourism resources. Attractions include Hiraiso Beach, Uronohora Seawater Pool, and the well-known Ajigaura Beach. Though the coastline at Ajigaura has experienced erosion due to port development, annual artificial sand replenishment projects help preserve the area's vibrant seaside leisure atmosphere.

A symbolic attraction of the city is the Hitachi Seaside Park, a national government park famous for its baby blue eyes (Nemophila) in spring and kochia (summer cypress) in autumn. These seasonal flower displays draw large numbers of tourists and make the park one of the most popular destinations in the northern Kanto region.

In addition, the Hitachinaka Port Area of Ibaraki Port is located within the city. As the starting point of the Kita-Kanto Expressway, the port is designated as both a key international and core logistics port. It continues to drive regional economic development by enhancing trade and industrial activities.
