The Mall is one of Taipei’s most iconic upscale shopping centers. In Chinese, it is commonly referred to as “Far Eastern Mall” or “The Mall Far Eastern Shopping Center.” Located on Section 2, Dunhua South Road in Da’an District, Taipei, it forms part of the larger Far Eastern Complex together with the Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei and the Far Eastern Plaza office towers.

Officially opened in 1994, The Mall was highly influential in Taiwan at the time because it was not designed as a traditional department store. Instead, it introduced the concept of a modern urban “shopping mall” combined with international luxury flagship boutiques. Many European, American, and Japanese luxury brands chose The Mall as their first entry point into the Taiwanese market, making it an important symbol of Taipei’s fashion culture during the 1990s.

One of The Mall’s defining characteristics is its emphasis on a refined “luxury lifestyle” atmosphere rather than the crowded and highly commercial feeling of a conventional department store. The interior spaces feature high ceilings, spacious layouts, and a quiet, elegant environment that complements the tree-lined boulevard of Dunhua South Road, creating a sophisticated and international shopping experience. International fashion brands such as Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, and Max Mara were once among its tenants, further establishing it as a fashionable landmark frequently visited by celebrities, social elites, and international travelers in Taipei during its peak years.

Beyond luxury fashion and apparel, The Mall also actively promoted home design and lifestyle-oriented brands, introducing high-end furniture, designer home décor, and curated lifestyle products. This reflected its broader philosophy that “shopping is part of a lifestyle experience.”

In the history of Taipei’s commercial development, The Mall can be regarded as one of Taiwan’s earliest examples of a “luxury lifestyle mall.” Although the rise of large-scale department stores and shopping complexes in the Xinyi District later shifted the city’s retail focus, The Mall has continued to maintain a more mature, understated atmosphere that appeals particularly to international business travelers and customers seeking a quieter, more refined shopping environment distinct from the bustling energy of mainstream department stores.
