Nunobiki Herb Gardens
Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens is located in Chuo Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Built on the mountainside overlooking the city, it is a botanical garden where visitors can enjoy fragrant herbs, seasonal flowers, and sweeping panoramic views of Kobe. Opened in 1991, the gardens extend between the Wind Hill Intermediate Station and the Herb Garden Summit Station of the Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway. Visitors can board the ropeway near Shin-Kobe Station and reach the summit in approximately ten minutes while enjoying spectacular views of Kobe Harbor and the city skyline along the way.
The most iconic section of the gardens is the Fragrance Garden, where a wide variety of herbs—including lavender, chamomile, rosemary, thyme, and sage—are cultivated. Visitors can stroll leisurely along gently sloping pathways, appreciating the changing colors and aromas that accompany each season. More than simply a display garden, the Herb Gardens feature interactive exhibits that encourage guests to touch, smell, and learn about the practical uses of herbs, providing a deeper appreciation of herbal culture.
The park is divided into several themed areas, including the Lavender Garden, Blue Garden, Wildflower Garden, Japanese Herb Garden, Kitchen Garden, and Fragrant Lawn. The Lavender Garden is planted primarily with English lavender, creating a peaceful valley landscape filled with soft purple blooms. The Blue Garden showcases flowers in shades of blue and violet, producing a romantic atmosphere throughout the flowering season. Meanwhile, the Fragrant Lawn is planted with creeping thyme, which releases a delicate herbal fragrance when stepped on, offering visitors a unique sensory experience.
In addition to its gardens, the complex includes the Herb Museum, the Forest Hall, observation lounges, gift shops, and restaurants. At the museum, visitors can learn about the history and various uses of herbs, while the restaurants serve dishes prepared with fresh herbs. The shops offer a wide selection of herb-related products, aromatic goods, and locally inspired souvenirs, allowing guests to take home a fragrant reminder of their visit.
