Wings of Shalu

Located on Section 7 of Taiwan Boulevard, “Wings of Shalu” is a pedestrian overpass that combines practical functionality with landscape aesthetics. Since its completion in 2007 (the 96th year of the Republic of China), it has become a new landmark and a popular photography spot in the Shalu area of Taichung. The bridge features a large S-shaped curve. During the day, it resembles a majestic dragon lying across the road, symbolically guarding the people traveling between Taichung City and the Shalu district. At night, colorful LED lights on the bridge and steel cables flash in harmony with vehicle headlights, creating a vibrant and dynamic urban scene.

The construction of the "Wings of Shalu" was driven by traffic needs at the intersection of Provincial Highway 12 (Taiwan Boulevard) and Provincial Highway 10 (Sanmin Road) in Shalu District. This location is a critical junction leading to Taichung Port, National Freeway No. 2, and National Freeway No. 1. It is also near Zhulin Elementary School and Shalu Industrial High School, where students once had to cross a heavily trafficked road at ground level, raising safety concerns. After repeated appeals from local residents, the relevant authorities initiated this pedestrian bridge project to improve traffic safety and the pedestrian environment.

To harmonize with the urban landscape, a central bridge tower was specially set up in Sanmin Park. The overpass adopts a dual-tower, double-span cable-stayed bridge design. The towers are made of three round steel tubes, appearing light and dynamic. Paired with a minimalist box girder and distinctive railings, the design presents a modern architectural language. The twin-tower structure, resembling open arms, symbolizes central Taiwan’s warm welcome and openness. The ten rings and ten sets of diagonal cables between the towers represent "perfection in all aspects," reflecting the hope for well-rounded development in central Taiwan.

The name “Wings of Shalu” was chosen through an online vote, symbolizing the hope for a more vibrant and energetic future for the Shalu area.
