Located in Longtan District, Taoyuan City, Sankengzi Old Street is praised as the “First Street of Longtan.” It is a historical Hakka settlement rich in cultural character. In the past, Sankengzi was one of the most prosperous river ports along the Dahan River. However, as hydraulic engineering projects altered the river’s course and lowered the water level, its commercial function gradually declined.
Centered around Yongfu Temple, the old street extends outward with a layout that is narrow at the entrance and wider inside. The street retains typical Hakka village alley features, including narrow, winding paths designed not only for defense but also to create a unique spatial atmosphere. Arcade-style buildings line both sides of the street, preserving antique architectural elements that attract many tourists. One notable feature is the preserved “black-and-white washing channel,” a traditional irrigation canal where women once did laundry, symbolizing the lifestyle of earlier times.
The name "Sankengzi" derives from its geographical setting: located on a plateau, three small streams flow into the Dahan River, forming three natural gullies—hence the name. Development of the area dates back to the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, with Han Chinese settlers arriving in 1744 (Qianlong Year 9).
Built in 1791 (Qianlong Year 56), Yongfu Temple is the spiritual heart of the settlement, dedicated to the Three Celestial Emperors (Yao, Yu, and Shun). It serves as both a religious site and a center for cultural events. Sankengzi Old Street gained further fame as a filming location for the Taiwanese movies Twa-Tiu-Tiann and All You Need Is Love.
Moreover, the “Waterfront Tourism Green Corridor” that connects Daxi’s Yuemei area with Sankengzi Old Street allows visitors to explore rural irrigation canals, farmland scenery, and the cultural ambiance of the old street—all making it an ideal route for a deep dive into Taoyuan’s Hakka culture and history.
