Sakurajima

Sakurajima, located in Kagoshima Bay at the southern tip of Kyushu, Japan, is an active volcanic island covering approximately 77 square kilometers. It stands as one of Kagoshima Prefecture’s most iconic natural landmarks. Originally an isolated island, Sakurajima became connected to the Osumi Peninsula following the massive volcanic eruption in 1914, when lava flows bridged the gap. The island features a complex volcanic landscape formed by three main peaks: Kitadake (North Peak), Nakadake (Central Peak), and Minamidake (South Peak), which remains the most active today. Kitadake is the highest, reaching 1,117 meters, and its majestic presence can be felt even from afar.

The volcano is still active, and its crater lies only about 8 kilometers from central Kagoshima City, which has a population of around 600,000. This rare proximity between an active volcano and a major urban area has earned Sakurajima a place on the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) list of “Decade Volcanoes,” highlighting its importance for observation and research.

Getting to Sakurajima is convenient. The Kagoshima City-operated ferry runs 24/7 and takes just 15 minutes from the city center. Visitors can also access the island via bus services operated by Osumi Transit Network from the Osumi Peninsula side (e.g., Tarumizu and Kirishima). In addition, city-run buses serve various locations on the island, making it easy to explore its volcanic charm in depth.
