Dongshan Railway Station

Dongshan Station is located in Dongshan Township, Yilan County, and is a third-class station on the Taiwan Railways Yilan Line. It serves as the main transportation hub of Dongshan Township. In front of the station, Zhongzheng Road functions as the central thoroughfare of the area, lined with key institutions such as the township office, post office, farmers’ association, and tourist service center. This makes Dongshan Station not only a commuter hub but also an essential gateway for local administration and daily life.

To coordinate with the Yilan Line elevation project and the development of Dongshan River Forest Park (now known as Dongshan River Ecoark), the station was rebuilt in 2008. It became the first railway station in Taiwan to be designed with a leisure and tourism theme. The design of the new station was inspired by the concept of a “green tunnel”, with its exterior resembling a melon trellis, harmonizing with the natural scenery of Dongshan Township. This also made Dongshan Station the first elevated station on the eastern trunk line.

In 2015, Typhoon Dujuan struck the area, and the white fabric canopy over the platforms was severely damaged, with 14 panels torn apart by strong winds. The repair cost amounted to NT$20 million, but the roof has since been fully restored. Today, the station continues to uphold its tourism-oriented character. In addition to providing convenient train services, it also sells platform tickets, allowing visitors to enter and explore. A special commemorative stamp titled “Railway Travel · Happiness 111” is available, making the station a popular spot among railway enthusiasts and travelers for photography, stamp collecting, and memorable visits.
