Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of History

The Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of History, located in Mito City, sits within a corner of Kairakuen Park and serves as a comprehensive cultural facility combining the functions of a history museum and archival center. The museum’s permanent exhibition focuses on the historical evolution of castles from ancient to modern times, offering visitors a broad overview of the historical development of the Ibaraki region from prehistoric times to the present.
In addition to the permanent exhibits, the museum regularly hosts special and themed exhibitions, presenting a wide range of content that fosters deeper public interest and understanding of local history.
The museum also features the Tokugawa Ichimon Memorial Room, which rotates its exhibit themes and displays rare artifacts related to the Tokugawa main family. As a key base for the preservation and study of Ibaraki’s historical records, the museum is responsible for collecting and storing official documents and regional archives, playing a vital role in local historical research and education.
The museum grounds also include historically significant buildings, such as the former Mizuho Elementary School main building and the former Motegi Family Residence, both designated as cultural properties by Ibaraki Prefecture. Lined with seasonal ginkgo trees and lush gardens, the museum offers a peaceful setting that blends culture and nature, making it a unique destination for both learning and relaxation.
