Located within Goryokaku Park in Hakodate, Hokkaido, the Goryokaku Tower is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Standing 107 meters tall, it offers a spectacular panoramic view of the star-shaped Goryokaku Fortress. From the observation deck at 90 meters, visitors can take in the stunning shape of the fortress, reminiscent of a blooming star.
Each season presents a different landscape: in spring, cherry blossoms surround the moat like a sea of pink clouds; summer brings lush greenery contrasting beautifully with the stone walls; autumn covers the fortress corners in vivid red foliage; and in winter, snow and festive lights create a fairytale-like scene. On clear days, the observation deck offers expansive views of Hakodate City, Mount Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, and even as far as the Shimokita Peninsula.
At the center of the observation floor is the Goryokaku History Gallery, which explains the history and development of Goryokaku in a clear and accessible way. Exhibits include a detailed scale model of the completed fortress, 16 miniature maps illustrating historical events, and various panels related to Hakodate and Goryokaku. A notable highlight is the bronze statue of Toshizo Hijikata, the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, who died in the Battle of Hakodate.
The first floor features a bright, open-air atrium with a café, making it a great spot for a relaxing break during your visit. The space often hosts exhibitions and live music performances, adding a rich cultural dimension. The souvenir shop and restaurant inside the tower offer original goods and local specialties themed around Goryokaku and Hijikata Toshizo.
