Tokugawa Mitsukuni, also known as "Gikō" and famously referred to as "Mito Kōmon," was a renowned lord of the Mito Domain during the Edo period. He is remembered for his benevolent governance and deep scholarship.
Lord Mitsukuni was born in the 5th year of Kan'ei (1628) in the residence of Miki Jinbee, a vassal of the Tokugawa family. He spent the first four years of his life there and was raised as a child of the Miki family. To commemorate his birth and early childhood spent at this location, the local community established the Mito Kōmon Shrine (Gikō Shidō) at the site.
