The Himeji City Museum of Art, located within Himeji Park in Himeji City, Hyōgo Prefecture, opened in 1983 with the mission of promoting the city’s art and culture. Its collection focuses on works with deep ties to the region, pieces reflecting Himeji’s history and customs, Japanese modern and contemporary art, and overseas modern and contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on Belgium. This focus stems from Himeji’s sister-city relationship with Charleroi, Belgium. The museum houses around 350 Belgian works; while the number is modest, the collection sufficiently outlines the development of Belgian modern art.
Notably, local physician Kunii Kuizō donated his extensive collection of modern Western art to the museum in 1994, coinciding with Himeji Castle’s designation as a World Heritage Site, significantly enriching its holdings. The museum’s design blends elegance with openness, allowing visitors to enjoy not only the artworks but also the historic atmosphere, with views of Himeji Castle in the distance.
Operated directly by Himeji City, the museum is a member of both the Japanese Association of Museums and the Hyōgo Association of Museums. It is officially registered under the Museum Act by the Hyōgo Prefectural Board of Education. To encourage public engagement with art, the museum participates in various programs offering free admission to residents and schoolchildren, inviting more people to experience the world of art and culture.
