Shiba Park

Shiba Park

Shiba Park is located in Minato City, Tokyo, Japan. It is a historic and lush urban park, and the name “Shiba Park” also refers to the surrounding district, which includes Shiba Park 1-chome to 4-chome. The park is adjacent to famous landmarks such as Tokyo Tower and Zojoji Temple, making it one of the most popular leisure and sightseeing spots in Tokyo.

Shiba Park opened in 1873 (the 6th year of the Meiji era) and is one of the first parks established in Japan, alongside Ueno Onshi Park. The land originally belonged to Zojoji, the Tokugawa family temple. However, after the postwar policy of separation of religion and state, the area was redeveloped into a metropolitan park free of religious affiliation, with the addition of playgrounds, sports facilities, and open spaces for diverse public use. Today, Shiba Park surrounds Zojoji Temple, creating a unique landscape that blends temple and park.

In addition to vast lawns and tree-lined paths, the park also preserves historical sites, such as the Shiba Maruyama Kofun (an ancient burial mound from the Kofun period) and the Maruyama Shell Mound. These features make it a rare public space in the city where visitors can experience archaeological heritage. The park also houses schools, libraries, hotels, and other facilities, combining cultural, educational, and touristic functions.

The most popular area is the eastern promenade facing Tokyo Tower. Whether by day or night, visitors can enjoy the stunning scenery where nature and the iconic tower harmonize, making it a favorite spot for couples and film productions. At dusk, the illuminated Tokyo Tower contrasts beautifully with the serene park landscape, creating a romantic atmosphere rarely found in the city.

In addition, the name “Shiba Park” is also used for subway stations (Toei Mita Line’s Shiba Koen Station) and expressway interchanges (Shuto Expressway’s Shiba Koen Interchange), further establishing the name as a symbolic landmark of the area.
