Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Hall
Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Hall (Mizuki Shigeru Kinenkan) is located in Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture. It is a manga and animation-themed museum dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the original works of manga artist Mizuki Shigeru, as well as the yokai- and spirit-related materials and artifacts he collected throughout his life. The memorial hall opened in March 2003 and serves as one of the central facilities of “Mizuki Shigeru Road.”
The original memorial hall was housed in a renovated former traditional restaurant building. It featured permanent exhibition rooms on the first and second floors as well as a special exhibition room, displaying original drawings and materials from representative works such as GeGeGe no Kitaro. As the building aged, in 2022 the authorities developed the “Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Hall Renewal Basic Concept and Plan,” and the hall was closed for reconstruction starting in March 2023. After renovations, it reopened on April 20, 2024.
The renewed exhibitions are divided into three main sections:
-
Prologue: “Welcome to Mizuki’s World!”
-
Main Themes: focusing on “Sakaiminato and Mizuki Shigeru,” “War and Mizuki Shigeru,” “Mizuki Shigeru the Manga Artist,” and “Mizuki Shigeru the Yokai Researcher.”
-
Epilogue: “Mizuki Shigeru’s Theory of Happiness.”
Together, these sections provide a comprehensive presentation of Mizuki’s life story and creative universe.
The hall is operated by the General Incorporated Association Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Hall Management and Operation Consortium. In addition to exhibitions, the institution actively engages in the digitization of cultural resources, including the archiving of original drawings and yokai heritage materials. It also collaborates with other facilities, such as the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, and the Yumoto Koichi Memorial Japan Yokai Museum in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, to promote interregional yokai culture research and dissemination.
