Xinying Railway Cultural Park

Xinying Railway Cultural Park is located within the Xinying Sugar Factory, one of the three major headquarters of Taiwan Sugar Corporation (Taisugar). Due to its higher organizational status, the office buildings and employee residences within the park were constructed on a larger scale with distinct features. In the past, the dense railway network and flexible vehicle scheduling made Xinying an important transportation hub during the era of the sugar industry’s narrow-gauge passenger trains, known as the “Wufenche” (five-foot wagons).

The park still preserves a considerable number of operational Wufenche passenger cars and small locomotives. At the diesel engine depot, visitors can find a variety of small diesel locomotives on display, showcasing the heyday of sugar transportation. A particularly unique exhibit is the dual-gauge (1,067 mm) Hitachi seven-foot car, which was mainly used for transporting raw materials between the Taiwan Railways Xinying Station and Taisugar’s by-product processing plant. This made Xinying’s railway system more diverse and of high historical value.

Beyond static displays, visitors can personally experience riding the Taisugar Wufenche. On weekends or during specific times, these small trains operate along designated routes, taking passengers through sugarcane fields and factory grounds. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the local scenery and relive the atmosphere of Taiwan’s sugar railway era. For both children and adults, it offers not only a fun railway journey but also an engaging way to learn about Taiwan’s sugar industry heritage.
