Shen Ji New Village is located near Taichung’s Calligraphy Greenway. Originally built as staff housing for the Taiwan Provincial Audit Office, it has a history of nearly half a century. Following the downsizing and eventual suspension of the provincial government, the residential compound was left idle and abandoned. Although its area is only 0.52 hectares, its prime location—close to artistic, cultural, and emerging commercial districts—made it a uniquely distinctive space within the city.
To revitalize disused public buildings, the Taichung City Government introduced private and corporate participation through entrusted operations and open bidding, repositioning the site as a mixed-use cultural and creative industry cluster. By linking with the Greenway, the art museum, and surrounding cultural-creative shops, Shen Ji New Village gradually fostered an industrial clustering effect, evolving into a vital node of Taichung’s “Cultural-Creative Industry Corridor along the Greenway.”
In its reuse planning, Shen Ji New Village emphasizes the concept of “the three livings” — living, production, and ecology, while actively supporting young people in micro-entrepreneurship. Through government support combined with youth creativity, the old dormitory compound was transformed into a vibrant entrepreneurial hub. Today, the village is lined with small shops selling specialty foods, handmade crafts, and creative goods. Murals painted on the walls further enhance the artistic atmosphere, giving the space a unique charm that blends nostalgia with modern trends.
