Kokusai Street (Japanese: 国際通り / こくさいとおり, こくさいどおり) is a major commercial street located in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Stretching approximately 1.6 kilometers, it extends from the intersection in front of the Prefectural Office to the Asato Three-way Junction. It is one of the busiest and most iconic streets in Naha.
The street was first established in 1933 as the shortest route from central Naha to Shuri City, and was locally referred to as the “New Prefectural Road.” At the time of its construction, the surrounding area was sparsely populated. After the Battle of Okinawa ended in 1944, the U.S. military began occupying the Ryukyu Islands and built a theater called the "Ernie Pyle International Theater" along this road. This spurred development in the surrounding area and led to the street being named “Kokusai Street” (International Street). As the U.S. military presence and commercial activity increased, more Okinawans came to the area to do business. Department stores, shopping centers, and other buildings began to emerge, quickly transforming Kokusai Street into the most prosperous district in Naha. It has since been dubbed “The Miracle Mile.”
