Ichiran Ramen – Dazaifu Sando Branch
Located along the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangū Shrine, the Ichiran Dazaifu Sando Branch is a special location of Japan’s famous ramen chain Ichiran, renowned for its “Flavor Concentration Booths” that allow diners to savor their ramen in peaceful isolation. Ichiran’s signature natural tonkotsu broth—rich, creamy, and free from artificial additives—has made it a beloved name among ramen enthusiasts worldwide.
This branch’s highlight is its exclusive “Success Ramen” (Gōkaku Ramen), inspired by Dazaifu’s long-standing tradition of academic devotion. The ramen is served in a pentagon-shaped bowl, a visual pun since “five corners” (gokaku) sounds identical to “success” (gōkaku) in Japanese. The rim of the bowl is adorned with motifs of plum blossoms and wooden prayer plaques (ema), symbols of scholarship and fulfilled wishes, while the word “決定” (Determination) is printed at the bottom—encouraging diners to finish strong and stay resolute.
The noodles themselves measure 59 centimeters, another playful reference to the number’s pronunciation (go-kyū), echoing gōkaku and symbolizing perseverance and good fortune.
As Dazaifu Tenmangū enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the Shinto deity of learning, countless students visit each year to pray for academic success. For many visitors, enjoying Ichiran’s “Success Ramen” after praying has become a cherished ritual—a flavorful blessing before exams and a delicious token of encouragement.
