The northern area falls within the Ōnuma Quasi-National Park and features well-known tourist attractions such as Mount Komagatake, Ōnuma, Konuma, and Junsainuma. The southern area mainly consists of plains and hilly terrain, with the town center developing along National Route 5.
Nanae Town’s primary industry is agriculture, with major crops including rice, daikon radishes, carrots, apples, and grapes. In terms of livestock, dairy farming is predominant. In recent years, flower cultivation has also flourished, with various flowers such as carnations being grown.
The name "Nanae" is derived from the Ainu language, either from "naa-nay" meaning "many streams," or "nuwe-an-nay" meaning "fertile river."
