The Miyajima Ropeway began operation on April 1, 1959, connecting Momijidani Station (Momijidani Park) with Shishiiwa Station on Mount Misen. The entire line is composed of two different types of ropeway systems: the “circulating” system and the “funicular-type” (counterbalanced shuttle) system. Along the way is Kayadani Station, which serves solely as a transfer point between the Momijidani Line and the Shishiiwa Line, without entry or exit facilities.
A free shuttle bus runs between the entrance of Momijidani Park and Momijidani Station to make access easier for visitors. Since October 17, 2009, the entire line has accepted the transportation IC card “PASPY,” improving convenience for passengers.
Next to Shishiiwa Station is the Shishiiwa Observatory, offering a sweeping and magnificent view of the Seto Inland Sea. From the station, it’s about a 30-minute hike along the mountain trail to the summit observatory of Mount Misen, where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Miyajima and the surrounding sea.
