Alishan National Forest Recreation Area

The Alishan Forest Recreation Area is located at an elevation of 2,216 meters. Surrounded by mountains and blessed with a cool and pleasant climate, it is renowned for its “Five Wonders of Alishan”: sunrise, sea of clouds, sunset glow, forests, and the mountain forest railway. These natural marvels attract numerous domestic and international visitors each year. Additionally, the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous Tsou people adds a unique charm to the region's tourism.

To promote tourism, the Alishan National Scenic Area Administration has developed six themed travel routes centered around five major natural features: tea, coffee, railway, indigenous culture, ecology, and romance. It actively promotes a variety of themed travel activities. In addition, the administration supports local industries with initiatives such as “Tea Travel Experts,” “Tsou Travel Experts,” and the development of featured shops, encouraging boutique, in-depth, and niche tourism that allows visitors to explore Alishan’s natural and cultural beauty on a deeper level.

Alishan spans across the tropical, subtropical, and temperate climate zones of Taiwan's forest vertical distribution, fostering a rich and diverse forest ecosystem. It is especially famous for its cypress trees. As you walk through the forest, majestic trees are visible everywhere. The iconic tree species of Alishan—Taiwan red cypress, Taiwan hinoki cypress, Taiwania, hemlock, and Taiwan white pine—are collectively known as the "Five Trees of Alishan." Among them, Japanese cedar is the most successfully cultivated non-native tree in the area. Along the forest railway, layers of mountain forests unfold in a picturesque landscape.

From mid-March to mid-April, Alishan enters its cherry blossom season. During this time, Yoshino cherry, double-petaled cherry, and mountain cherry trees bloom in vibrant colors, creating a captivating scene. Other flowers such as Rhododendron morii, Photinia, and foxglove also bloom in succession, filling the area with the energy of spring. The park also houses a natural reserve for the Taiwan Pleione orchid, providing an excellent habitat for conservation and a special place for visitors to admire.

Landscapes such as Tashan (Tower Mountain) and Sister Ponds, along with cultural sites like the museum, Ciyun Temple, and the old train exhibition area, are all must-see highlights for anyone visiting Alishan.
