Nanjo City was established in 2006 through the merger of Sashiki Town, Chinen Village, Tamagusuku Village, and Ozato Village, all formerly part of Shimajiri District. Surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, the city is known for its heart-shaped terrain, which has become a distinctive feature. From Kudaka Island, revered as the "Island of the Gods," to Sefa-utaki, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with numerous cultural heritage sites, beaches, and popular attractions, the city offers a wide variety of unique travel experiences. Many cafes and restaurants with stunning views make it a beloved destination known as the “Land of Pilgrimage.” Among them, Chinen Misaki Park, located on a prominent cape, is one of the top scenic spots. The park features pavilions with red-tiled roofs and walking paths, making it an ideal rest stop during a self-driving trip.
In addition, Nanjo is the least populated of the 11 cities in Okinawa Prefecture and is the only one without a police station or high school. Law enforcement services are managed by the neighboring Yonabaru Police Station.
