Shiroishi City

Miyagi Zao Fox Village is a privately operated animal park located in the northwestern part of Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, at the foot of the Zao mountain range in the "Southern Zao" area. Known simply as “Fox Village” or “Zao Fox Village,” it specializes in exhibiting and caring for foxes. Situated at an altitude of around 590 meters, it is one of the few places in the world where visitors can closely observe and interact with foxes, attracting large numbers of domestic and international tourists.

Currently, the park is home to approximately 250 foxes of six different species. Over 100 of them roam freely in a fenced woodland area that mimics their natural habitat. Although foxes are nocturnal and less active during the day, some can still be seen responding to visitors. They love digging and lying on the ground — especially after it rains, it’s common to see them playfully covered in mud, a popular scene for photos.

Fox Village places a strong emphasis on health and safety. Since wild foxes can carry parasites such as Echinococcus, all foxes in the park are captive-bred and undergo regular deworming and sanitation to prevent any transmission of diseases to humans. Visitors can safely enjoy viewing and interacting with them. There’s even a designated area for the rare experience of holding a fox — a unique activity especially popular among foreign tourists. Starting in spring, visitors can also enjoy cuddling baby foxes, adding to the park’s heartwarming appeal.

In addition to foxes, the park also houses small animals such as rabbits, allowing guests to interact closely with various creatures. Foxes appear sleek and slim in summer, but in winter they grow thick, fluffy coats, transforming into adorable “mofu-mofu” (fluffy) creatures — a highlight for winter photography. Despite heavy snow and limited access, the park remains open year-round, making it a popular destination during the snowy Zao season.

Fox Village also serves an educational role, offering hands-on learning and internships for students. It is one of the few places in Japan where visitors can learn about fox care and tourism-based pasture systems, attracting students from all over the country.
