Lantan Scenic Area

Lantan is located in the Shanziding area on the northeastern outskirts of Chiayi City and is a renowned attraction that blends natural scenery, water resources, and historical heritage. According to legend, Lantan’s history dates back to around 1620, when the Dutch built a dam on the Luliao Creek, a tributary of the Bazhang River, to store water—marking the beginning of Lantan as a reservoir. During the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese further developed the site by constructing a dam and formally incorporating Lantan into Chiayi’s public water supply system as a storage reservoir for the city’s water plant. Today, Lantan continues to play an essential role in supplying drinking water and irrigation water to Chiayi, making it an indispensable water source for the city’s operation.

The waters of Lantan are crystal clear, surrounded by gently rolling hills covered in lush greenery. On moonlit nights, the lake’s surface reflects the soft glow of the moon, creating a poetic and picturesque view. This scene, known as “Moonlit Lantan,” is celebrated as one of the “Eight Scenic Views of Chiayi.” A road encircles the lake, and well-maintained trails allow visitors to easily tour the perimeter. Along the way, the Observation Tower offers an elevated vantage point to take in the harmonious blend of the lake’s waters and distant mountains—a truly refreshing sight.

Beyond its value as a water source and scenic spot, Lantan is also rich in natural ecology. The hilly terrain and dense forests provide excellent habitats for various flora and fauna, especially birds—over sixty species have been recorded—making it a popular bird-watching destination in Chiayi. Whether enjoying the morning chorus of birds or taking a quiet stroll by the lake at dusk, visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty and tranquility of nature.

On the southwestern high ground of the lake stands Sanxin Pavilion, which serves as a rest and viewing spot. From here, visitors can overlook the city and take in sweeping views of Chiayi. Lantan is well-equipped with recreational facilities, attracting large crowds on holidays for walking, cycling, and fitness activities, making it an integral part of local residents’ leisure life.

In recent years, thanks to efforts from local communities and civic groups, the hilly area on the east side of the reservoir has been developed into “Lantan Back Mountain,” also known as Sunliao Mountain. With its modest elevation, close proximity to the city, and well-developed trails, it has quickly become a popular hiking spot. The route is shaded by dense forest and offers wide-open views, beloved not only by locals but also by visitors from other areas who come to enjoy the outdoors.
