Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley)

Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley) is a volcanic crater located near the famous Lake Tōya, formed approximately 10,000 years ago. This area, about 450 meters in diameter, still emits white steam to this day. With a barren landscape and a strong sulfuric smell permeating the air, it resembles a scene from hell—hence the name "Hell Valley."

Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley) is one of the main hot spring sources for Noboribetsu Onsen, supplying thermal waters with up to 11 different mineral compositions. Over a century ago, people began drawing water from here for use, giving rise to the region’s now-thriving hot spring culture and tourism industry.
