Noboribetsu Onsen Street

Noboribetsu Onsen is located in Noboribetsu City, Iburi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan (formerly known as Ezo, which was later divided into provinces including the old Iburi Province during the Meiji era). It is one of Hokkaido's most renowned hot spring areas. Widely known since the Edo period, it was formally developed into a therapeutic retreat and tourist destination during the Meiji period. The famous Jigokudani ("Hell Valley") is also located here. In 2004, the Noboribetsu Onsen area was designated as one of the Hokkaido Heritage sites.
The name "Noboribetsu" originates from the Ainu word "nupur-pet," meaning "dark-colored river."
