Located in Hakodate, the Trappistine Convent (トラピスチヌ修道院), established in 1898, is Japan's first convent for women. The convent features red brick walls and semi-circular arched windows, combining German and Roman architectural styles, making its appearance particularly striking. Even today, the nuns continue to live a simple life centered around prayer and labor, following traditional practices. During your visit, you can not only admire the unique and beautiful architecture but also stroll through the meticulously maintained seasonal gardens. In spring, when cherry blossoms bloom, and in autumn, when the maple leaves turn red, the convent becomes a highly popular sightseeing spot. Be sure not to miss the madeleine cakes handmade by the nuns — a limited treat available only here and highly popular among visitors.
