Hakodate Morning Market is located in Wakamatsu-cho, Hakodate City, Hokkaido, Japan, just about 200 meters from Hakodate Station. It is one of Japan's most well-known morning markets. The market originally began to develop in a corner of the plaza in front of Hakodate Station after Japan's defeat in World War II in 1945, and was later relocated to its current site in Wakamatsu-cho in 1956.
Covering an area of about 3 hectares, the Hakodate Morning Market is home to around 160 shops and employs approximately 1,000 people. It attracts roughly 1.8 to 2 million tourists annually, with an average of 4,000 to 5,000 visitors per day. The market is open year-round, though each shop decides independently whether to open on a given day. Most shops begin operating between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. and close around noon, while some remain open until about 2:00 or 3:00 p.m.
