Ximending is a well-known shopping district located in the Wanhua District of Taipei City. It primarily attracts young people and international tourists. According to the Ximen Pedestrian Zone Development Association, the “Ximending Commercial District” centers around the Ximen Pedestrian Area and is roughly bounded by Zhonghua Road, Kangding Road, Hankou Street, and Chengdu Road.
The name “Ximending” originates from the Japanese colonial period. In 1922, when Taipei City was established, Ximending was one of the administrative divisions created at the time. Its area roughly corresponds to today’s “Ximen Li” near Chengdu Road, enclosed by Emei Street, Kangding Road, Neijiang Street, and Zhonghua Road. However, the area now commonly referred to as Ximending has expanded significantly and includes areas that were formerly known as Xinqi Town, Wakatake Town, Suehiro Town, Kotobuki Town, Tsukiji Town, Hama Town, and Motoniwa Town.
Due to its youthful energy and vibrant pop culture atmosphere, Ximending is often dubbed the “Myeongdong of Taiwan,” the “Shibuya of Taipei,” or the “Harajuku of Taipei.” It is a must-visit destination for shopping and leisure among both young locals and international travelers visiting Taipei.
