Yuanshan Township, located in western Yilan County, Taiwan, is a rural administrative district that combines abundant natural resources with rich cultural characteristics. It borders Jiaoxi Township to the north, Yilan City to the east, Wujie Township to the southeast, Sanxing Township to the south, Datong Township to the southwest, and Wulai District of New Taipei City to the west and northwest. Its diverse terrain blends plains with mountain landscapes.
As of the end of 2024, Yuanshan has a population of about 32,000 and around 13,000 households. In terms of demographics, Yuanshan has the highest proportion of working-age population (15–64 years old) in the county, accounting for nearly 72% of its residents.
The township’s landscape combines plains and hills, forming a natural barrier on the western side of the Yilan Plain. With abundant water resources and fertile conditions for farming, Yuanshan also benefits from its proximity to Yilan City, balancing the tranquility of rural life with the convenience of urban access. Its peaceful environment and evenly distributed population density make it an ideal base for developing leisure agriculture, eco-tourism, and a livable community.
Yuanshan boasts rich tourism resources. Scenic lakes such as Wulongpi, Dahu, Leigongpi, and Taiyangpi highlight the serene beauty of water and mountains. Recreational water areas like Happy Valley, Crab Bubbling, Bizaitou, and Dajiaoxi offer cool retreats in summer. The Yuanshan Hot Springs are also well known for their unique mineral qualities, providing visitors with soothing relaxation.
In ecological education, the Fushan Botanical Garden preserves rich plant diversity, serving as a treasure trove for nature observation. Shuanglianpi is famous for its precious wetland ecosystem and endemic species. Shangde Village Riverside Park and the Yilan River levee trails provide spaces for residents and tourists to connect with nature through leisure and exercise. The Experimental Forest of National Ilan University further serves as an important site combining ecology and education.
Culturally, Yuanshan preserves a variety of historic and heritage sites. Yuanshan Park, formerly the site of the Yuanshan Shinto Shrine, now features retired fighter jets and tanks as historical relics. The Great Tree in Jietoufen Village is said to be the birthplace of Taiwanese opera (Gezaixi), symbolizing traditional performance culture. Other sites include the Peng Fu Loyalty Monument, Yuanshan Dazhong Temple, the Lin Family Residence in Dasanjou, and the ruins of Wu Juren Zhou Zhentong’s residence. The Mud Buddha of Bei Hou Temple is designated as a cultural asset of Yilan County. Jietoufen Community also retains the characteristics of a traditional settlement, showcasing distinctive local charm.
In addition, Yuanshan integrates industry and tourism. The King Car Biotechnology Center and the internationally renowned Kavalan Whisky Distillery not only promote local industry but also attract visitors from around the world.
