Beinan Archaeological Site Park

Beinan Archaeological Site Park is a comprehensive park that integrates prehistoric culture, indigenous culture, and natural landscapes. Its open park space and museum design not only allow for ongoing archaeological excavations but also for the exhibition and preservation of cultural artifacts. This distinctive feature is what makes the Beinan Site Park uniquely captivating. Visitors can explore the exhibition hall to gain in-depth knowledge of the Beinan site and its cultural background; they can also visit the archaeological site and the crescent-shaped stone pillars to closely observe relics and historical artifacts dating back thousands of years. In addition, from the observation decks on both sides of the park, one can overlook the park’s natural scenery—and with some luck—even witness archaeologists conducting excavations.

The Beinan Site is one of the representative archaeological sites of the Neolithic Beinan Culture in eastern Taiwan. According to archaeological research, the site dates back to around 5,300 to 2,300 years ago, with its peak period between 3,500 and 2,300 years ago. The site covers an area of approximately 1 million square meters (about 100 hectares), making it the largest known prehistoric settlement site in Taiwan. A large number of slate coffins and finely crafted burial goods have been unearthed at the site, making it one of the largest slate coffin burial clusters in the Pacific Rim. The site has been designated a National Historic Site by the Ministry of Culture and is home to the Beinan Cultural Park—the first park in Taiwan themed around an archaeological site, covering an area of about 30 hectares (300,000 square meters).

The park’s outdoor area also features life-size (1:1 scale) reconstructions of prehistoric dwellings, including a youth assembly house and a residential house of the Beinan people, offering visitors a tangible experience of prehistoric life. As an open green space, the entire park is ideal not only for tourism but also for local citizens seeking leisure and relaxation. Within the park, there are spacious lawns, an exhibition hall, and a performance plaza, as well as natural plant forests and archaeological walking routes, providing a rich and immersive travel experience. From the observation decks, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Beinan River, the Liji Badlands, and the entire Taitung City area. Strolling across the verdant lawns feels like a journey through time—a cultural exploration that is both educational and emotionally engaging.
