Wulaokeng Scenic Area

Wulao Creek is located at the border between Dongshan Township and Su’ao Township in Yilan County. It is formed by the convergence of two streams from the east and west, stretching approximately 24 kilometers in length. In earlier times, early settlers mistakenly believed that the valley contained gold sand, attracting many people eager to pan for gold. However, most ended up losing their fortunes and leaving in disappointment. Due to its pronunciation in Taiwanese, the area came to be known as "Wulao Keng."
Downstream from Wulao Keng lies A-Jian City (Ajiancheng), which gained fame for its favorable geography, fresh air, and pure water. The local girls were also known for their delicate and beautiful appearance, giving rise to the saying: "Wulao Keng's big stone drum, A-Jian City's beautiful water girls." This reputation spread far and wide and is still remembered today.
Wulao Valley is lush with dense forests, crystal-clear and fast-flowing streams, and scattered with unique rock formations. Its winding trails and sweet spring water weave together a picturesque natural landscape. It has earned the nickname “Wulao Forest and Springs” and has been recognized as one of the new "Eight Scenic Spots of Lanyang." The park features vibrant green meadows, and several check dams built in the stream create small waterfalls. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom, offering a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere.
The forests on both sides of the stream are dense and filled with greenery, creating a beautiful natural environment rich in ecological resources. The area is especially notable for its abundant and diverse bird and butterfly species, often attracting visitors to stop and observe them. Here, you can enjoy stream tracing, birdwatching, and butterfly watching—all in one visit. It serves as a perfect outdoor classroom, ideal for both leisure and nature education. The area also includes well-equipped camping facilities, including designated camping zones and cooking pavilions, accommodating up to 5,000 campers at once.
In recent years, every spring, the Yilan County Government has hosted the Green Expo here, featuring various pavilions themed around environmental protection and nature. This event draws large numbers of visitors to explore the wonders of the natural world and enjoy the vibrant outdoor atmosphere.
