Liyu Lake

Liyu Lake (鯉魚潭), located in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, is the northernmost major attraction of the East Rift Valley National Scenic Area. This natural lake was formed through river capture. It has a long north–south axis and a narrower east–west span, giving it an oval shape. The lake covers about 104 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 15 meters. Fed by underground springs, its waters remain clear and pristine year-round.

There are two explanations for the origin of the name Liyu Lake (“Carp Lake”). One suggests that the nearby mountain resembles a carp, leading both the mountain and lake to be named after the fish, reflected in the local saying: “There is a carp on Carp Mountain, and carps swim in Carp Lake.” Another explanation comes from an Atayal (Taroko) legend: when tribespeople climbed to the summit and looked down, they felt the lake resembled a struggling, leaping carp, thus naming it accordingly.

The lake’s natural environment is well preserved, with abundant biodiversity. Each April and May, it hosts the Firefly Festival, making it a key site for observing fireflies and demonstrating successful local conservation efforts. The nearby Yu-Shan Theological Seminary is also a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in spring.

Today, Liyu Lake is not only admired for its serene waters and the surrounding mountains but has also become one of Hualien’s representative attractions. It is considered a must-visit destination, along with Taroko Gorge and Qixingtan (Seven Star Lake), as part of the county’s top three scenic highlights.
