Kamakura Station is located at the border of Komachi 1-chome and Onarimachi in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is jointly operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden).
The JR section of the station is on ground level, while the platforms are elevated on an embankment. The ticket gates and Enoden platform are located at a lower level, and the tracks that pass through the east-west passage beyond the ticket gates are constructed with a girder bridge design. The JR platform is an island platform with two tracks, and there is an additional siding on the east side. There used to be a freight siding on the outbound side, but it was removed in the 1970s and the space has since been converted into a parking lot.
Because the station is located in a popular tourist area, many extra trains are added on weekends and national holidays to manage the crowds. Although there is a siding for parking trains, Kamakura Station does not have facilities for train turnarounds. Therefore, many trains are sent back empty to nearby Zushi Station or Yokosuka Station for reversing operations and then sent to Ōfuna Station. The returning trains also come from these parking stations back to Kamakura for boarding.
The JR platform has two stairways: one main stairway equipped with an elevator and escalator, and an older stairway leading toward the Kita-Kamakura direction. The station’s roof blends modern and traditional architectural styles, with some columns made from repurposed steel rails dating back to the Meiji and Taishō periods.
The Enoden station area is located next to the JR west exit and is directly connected to it, with no exit on the east side. Unlike JR, all Enoden facilities are located at ground level.
The Enoden platform is of a bay platform design, with two platform faces and two tracks. The platform numbering continues from the JR side, designated as Platforms 3 through 5. Platform 3 is used for boarding, while Platform 4 is a shared disembarkation platform for both tracks. Platform 5 is only used on weekday mornings or during peak travel seasons such as New Year and Golden Week, when it operates alongside Platform 3 to allow staggered departures and increase train frequency.
Entrance tickets are shared with JR, so the fare is different from other Enoden stations and is calculated based on JR Kamakura Station fares. Also, the paid areas of Enoden and JR are connected, allowing access with a ticket from either operator. Since there are no automatic ticket gates inside the station, station staff manually inspect tickets for entry.
