Zhuangwei Township is located on the Lanyang Plain in eastern Yilan County, Taiwan. It lies in the lower reaches and estuary area of the Lanyang River, bordering the Pacific Ocean to the east and adjacent to Yilan City. It is a coastal rural area that blends ocean and pastoral scenery. The terrain of the township is flat, with sandy soil that drains well, and abundant sunshine throughout the year, making Zhuangwei an ideal place for farming.
Agriculture is the primary industry in Zhuangwei Township. With fertile land and convenient irrigation, the area produces a wide variety of crops, especially root crops such as peanuts, radishes, watermelons, and yams. Local fruits and scallions are of high quality, and the township is particularly renowned for its rice, ranking among Taiwan’s three major rice-producing regions.
In addition, the coastal areas of Zhuangwei have developed a distinctive fishing culture. Early residents relied on fishing and traditional practices such as “Qian Gu” (seine net fishing). This age-old fishing method is still preserved today as part of local cultural experiences. In 2016, the Buhu Community introduced hands-on Qian Gu activities, allowing visitors to personally participate and experience this traditional fishing village technique.
Beyond its rich agricultural and fishing industries, Zhuangwei’s geographical location also enhances its tourism appeal. Situated at the heart of the Lanyang Plain coast, it offers a superb view of the “Guishan Sunrise,” making it a popular spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.
