Ryūgasaki City is located in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, within the Ken’nan (southern prefectural) region. It has steadily developed since being designated a city in 1954 (Showa 29). Under the National Capital Region Development Law, Ryūgasaki is designated as a suburban development zone, making it part of the Tokyo metropolitan area with urban planning and development potential.

There are multiple ways to write the name of Ryūgasaki City, but officially, the city's name is written as 「龍ケ崎市」, using the kanji “龍” and the katakana character “ケ”. However, in actual usage, some facilities use the alternative form 「竜ヶ崎」, such as Ryūgasaki Station operated by Kantō Railway, and the names of certain prefectural high schools.
